ITP Code of Practice

The ITP Code of Practice provides guidance for IT professionals in New Zealand. It helps IT professionals understand their responsibilities and behave in a professional, responsible and ethical way when working with technology, organisations and the public.

Professional Responsibilities

IT professionals have responsibilities to their employers, clients, colleagues and the wider community. They should provide reliable services, protect information, communicate honestly and make decisions that are fair and responsible.

Key Principles

Act professionally and honestly.
Protect confidential information.
Respect the privacy of individuals.
Maintain professional knowledge and skills. Avoid conflicts of interest.
Consider the effects of technology on people and society.
Take responsibility for professional decisions.

Māori Perspective

IT professionals should respect Māori values and perspectives when developing and using technology. Technology and information can affect whānau, communities, culture and whakapapa. Ethical IT practice should therefore consider cultural values, respect Māori interests and support responsible use of information.

Why Is the Code Important?

The Code helps IT professionals make responsible decisions when facing ethical issues. Following professional principles can help build trust, protect people and organisations, and encourage responsible use of technology in New Zealand.
